An editor would consider it great
good fortune to have one image by a photographer such as Andy Katz
or Chuck O'Rear or Rick Bolen in an issue. To have a cover photograph
by Katz, a special image from O'Rear and an entire feature photographed
by Bolen is surely bliss. But that is what we have in this Harvest
issue. It is a magazine created for those who live and work here,
and especially those who visit.
All three of these photographers are masters in their own right,
with walls of awards and shelves of outstanding books to their credit.
What they all share is a deep and abiding respect for their subject,
in this famed corner of Northern California's Wine Country. That
they decided to share it with us in this issue through their stellar
work is a marvelous thing, and I am profoundly grateful to each
of them.
The words and illustrations here will take you into the restaurant
and mind of the famously iconoclastic Chef Philippe Jeanty of Yountville's
acclaimed Bistro Jeanty. Contributing Editor Andy Demsky also writes
about the other harvest the Napa Valley is becoming famous for,
the olive harvest and the oil resulting. Susan Reynolds talks to
what is rapidly becoming a familiar sight, a woman who has achieved
fame and success as a winemaker. You will also find out about wineries
that may have escaped your notice, restaurants that should not and
shops that are worth another look. As always we try to enlighten
simply because, living here, we find out new things and discover
new places almost every time we turn around.
Spend a few moments with this issue of Destination Napa Valley.
Enjoy the splendor of the photographs and make use of some of the
information in the articles and columns. We promise you this - it
will be time well spent, and most of all, we believe that it will
make your time in the Valley that much more enjoyable.
