Sometimes you find what you're
looking for where you least expect it. Other times you're not looking
at all and there it is, right in front of you. Sawyer Cellars, for
instance. Set on Route 29 near Sequoia Grove and Cakebread Cellars,
it is a delightful winery happily free of hype and not yet a victim
of its own success.
We found photographer Teri Blodgett after wandering into Napa's
Imani Gallery one Saturday afternoon. It was instantly decided that
one of her images would be in the magazine, the only question was
which one. Rick Bolen, a photographer we knew by reputation for
his national and international work, was another instant choice
when we found he was available to shoot the photographs for our
new "Market Basket" series that features Piatti chef Peter Hall.
And, of course, Margretha Lane's photographs continue to grace our
pages, including this one.
Bob Trinchero found the time to sit and be interviewed about, as
we told him in advance, "anything but white Zinfandel." And Jerry
Comfort, at Meadowood was the first person to be on the receiving
end of another new feature called Our Ten Questions.
A lot of talented people settle in the Wine Country. Maybe to pursue
a career begun somewhere else, perhaps to start a new one. Luckily
there are local residents and visitors that support their work and
allow them to make a living by working at what they once dreamed
of doing. It is because of this that fine restaurants flourish,
galleries succeed and great photographers illustrate our magazine.
Wood workers, winemakers, artists, muralists, jewelry makers and
more all have found a spot where they can create their work and
live in a particularly gratifying part of the world. In this issue
of Destination Napa Valley, and the issues to follow, we'll take
you into their world for a few moments, and see what is behind the
scenes and on their minds. We hope you continue to come along with
us.
